My Story

I said Yes.

The Fire Fighters Charity asked if I'd like a charity place in the Loch Ness Marathon (27th September, 2026) and I said Yes.

So now I've got to do it...

When I replied to say I would, they asked me my motivation for doing it, and I said it was twofold:

1. I'd like to complete a marathon. I've done a number of half marathons and an aborted attempt at the Barcelona marathon - I'm presuming Loch Ness will provide much cooler air! That was in 2012 so this has been an itch I've been waiting a long time to scratch. Can I sneak it in before I turn 40 just six months later?

2. I've been a retained Firefighter at my community fire station for almost three years now, and I've met some of the best people. Every training course and exercise I go on, I'm always impressed by the kindness, bravery and good humour of my colleagues who give up a lot of their time to be part of the service. My bro-in-law Dan is a career firefighter and hero and I know has benefited from the support of the charity over the years in meeting various challenges. Raising funds for this cause specifically would be a nice nod to him and everyone I've met along the way, and could help to raise awareness of the charity in my little corner of the world.

So I'm asking for your support, with the prettiest of pleases. If I can lean on your generosity to give whatever you can towards my fundraising target, not only will this spur me on and keep me smiling while training, it'll help provide much needed funds for a worthwhile charity too.

Many thanks, FF Childs.

The Baxters Loch Ness Marathon is quite possibly one of the most stunning marathons in the world. With spectacular scenery, fantastic atmosphere and a truly memorable experience – it’s no wonder it is on the bucket list for so many runners from around the world.

The Loch Ness Marathon follows a spectacular point-to-point route alongside world famous Loch Ness, starting in an atmospheric moorland setting and continues through stunning Highland scenery, taking you along the south-eastern shores of Loch Ness, across the River Ness, to finish in Inverness, capital city of the Highlands.
